Officially launched in 2000, the Red Tide Offshore Monitoring Program relies upon volunteers of all kinds to help monitor blooms of Karenia brevis and other harmful algal blooms in offshore waters as well as alongshore beaches, inshore waters, and coastal bays. Sampling and shipping supplies are provided for each volunteer, who send in water samples to the FWRI microscopy lab for evaluation. The added coverage of volunteers in all coastal counties allows researchers to provide early warning to coastal residents in the area, continue lab research, and predict seasonal events.
